Digital Divide in Society

Honestly before watching the videos and reading the stories, I had no idea there was such a digital divide within our world. I guess I just never really thought about it that much. In one of the videos it said 30% of all k-12 students and more than 31 million adults don’t have access to the internet . Which is sad because our society is more technology driven than it’s ever been. When the world shifted to mostly technology, we left millions of people dumb founded not knowing what to do about the technology world. It really opened my eyes that you need to know how to use technology to basically do anything in life. Most jobs require you to know some bit of technology and most jobs you apply on line nowadays as well. Heck you need to know how to use technology to drive a car these days. Not knowing how to use technology can really hinder your life and your career. Another thing that goes with the digital divide is the culture split. There still is not much diversity within the world of technology. This goes into the not having access to internet. One of the videos said that most rural households with black, native American, and Latina are the ones without internet access or don’t have a technology device such as a laptop. I know we are working to close this divide by teaching technology classes to those who need it, and providing hotspots and laptops. Since this pandemic I have noticed colleges and high schools provide these items to those who need it and I think it’s awesome. It shows that they value everyones education.
